Volunteer Spotlight: Nikki Holmes

With the Wabash Valley Race for the Cure happening in Terre Haute on Saturday, October 8, we are shining the volunteer spotlight on Nikki Holmes, one of our Race Co-Chairs.

This is the first year Nikki Holmes has had a volunteer leadership role with us, although she has been participating on a team for the Wabash Valley Race for the Cure since 2008. Nikki started signing up for the Race that year to support her best and closest friend who had recently been diagnosed with breast cancer. Her group of friends have had a Race team in honor of her friend every year since 2008, except for the year her friend, who was the New Balance Honorary Race person in 2009, passed away.

Nikki says it was a difficult decision to return to the Race after losing her friend.

“I most likely would not have continued to have a team, but her 13-year-old daughter asked me to help her continue the team in her mother’s memory,” Nikki said. “Since then, we have continually had one of the largest non-corporate teams at the Wabash Valley Race each year, which is a testament to my friend and what she meant to people.”

Nikki said she was hesitant to accept the role of Race Co-Chair this year since she has never been directly involved with organizing the Race, but agreed in the spirit of her dear friend.

“It’s a great feeling the day of the Race each year to see all the teams gather to walk, run, fight and HOPE for the very same thing… THE CURES!”

From the whole Komen Central Indiana family, thank you for your contributions! You truly make a difference.
