Volunteer Spotlight: Gina Winings
Over the last five years, Gina Winings has been actively involved with Komen Central Indiana in a variety of ways. Gina has participated and fundraised for Race for the Cure and also represents Komen Central Indiana while volunteering at the Cancer Resource Center at IU Health’s Simon Cancer Center.
Gina connected with Komen Central Indiana when she was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer in April 2010. Gina praises Komen for the organization’s involvement in breast cancer research, locally, nationally and beyond. She says she loves contributing to Komen’s local mission in central Indiana and hopes to see an end to breast cancer in the future.
“Having TNBC, for which there currently is no targeted therapy, I see that much more research is needed and Komen provides funds for research as well,” Gina said. “Spreading awareness for this disease is so important, and Komen does this very well!”
Meeting other survivors has been one of the things that Gina enjoys most about her involvement with Komen Central Indiana. Gina shared that one of her most memorable moments was walking in the Pink Parade, which recognizes and celebrates breast cancer survivors at Race for the Cure.
“Seeing all of the survivors made me think that maybe I was actually going to survive this disease,” Gina said.
Gina will be attending our volunteer open house event from 5:30 – 7:30 on Wednesday, Aug. 24 at the Komen Central Indiana office. Get to know her, Komen Central Indiana staff and other volunteers, plus learn about ways to get involved. Email firstname.lastname@example.org to RSVP.
From the whole Komen Central Indiana family, thank you for your contributions! You truly make a difference.
