Joy Neely – 2015 Ambassador

Joy Neely CroppedJoy was diagnosed with breast cancer on March 18, 2014 and says it is a day she will never forget – a day that her life forever changed. Joy wished there would have been a guide book to tell her how to share this news with her two daughters. Sharing this news was one of the most difficult things that her and her husband have ever done as parents. However, despite the tears and fears, Joy’s daughters quickly took on the attitude that “everything happens for a reason” and they would conquer breast cancer together.

Within a couple weeks of Joy’s diagnosis, her youngest daughter convinced her to sign up for the 2014 Komen Central Indiana Race for the Cure. She thought it would be a great way to kick-off their breast cancer journey as a family. Not only did Joy’s daughter rise to the occasion with support, but so did friends, family and co-workers, helping Joy finish in the top ten individual fundraisers raising over $4,000!

This journey gave Joy the opportunity to reflect on her life. She takes more time for herself and for her family, who gave her the strength to fight breast cancer.

Joy’s takeaway message for others:

“Everything does happen for a reason.  I have learned so many valuable life lessons over the last year as a result of going through breast cancer.  I count this experience as a blessing.”
